HCMC Museum of Fine Arts: Art Space and Memories in the Heart of Saigon
Located in District 1, the HCMC Museum of Fine Arts is an iconic cultural landmark. It preserves the flow of Vietnamese fine arts through many historical periods.
With its central location and historic architecture, the museum is an attractive destination. It also offers a unique spatial experience in the middle of the urban landscape.
Origin and Architecture: Impressions of Old Saigon
This building was originally the mansion of Hua Bon Hoa, a highly influential merchant in Saigon during the early 20th century. Built around 1929, the building features an architectural style that blends Western and East Asian influences. It boasts characteristic details such as arched doorways, patterned tile floors, wide corridors, and curved staircases.
After 1975, the building was repurposed, and in 1987, it officially became the city's fine arts museum. To this day, it retains nearly its entire original structure, becoming one of the few historical buildings still standing prominently in the city center.
Exhibition Space: A Journey Through Art Eras
The museum currently houses thousands of works, ranging from traditional to modern fine arts. The collections are distributed across different floors, making it easy for visitors to access each stage of Vietnamese art — from lacquer and oil paintings to sculptures and contemporary creations.
Natural light filters through the large window systems. The signature yellow tones blend harmoniously, creating a space with visual depth. The exhibition space is perfectly paced, offering a sense of stillness and depth — ideal for appreciating art and observing the intricate architecture.
Visitor Experience: Another Slice of Saigon
Natural light pours through the large doors, merging with the signature yellow walls. As a result, the space gains a unique visual depth. Details like spiral staircases, long corridors, and high windows become focal points, each perspective holding its own value.
This is also a popular spot for photography, where people capture beautiful moments that evoke memories of an old Saigon.
